Hiking E-Book – Cyprus

Walking Guide Cyprus: E-Book

The insider's guide: more than 90 hiking routes, hidden viewpoints, and the 10 best hikes on the island.

Most visitors in Cyprus do not venture beyond the beach…

This Cyprus walking guide takes you to all kinds of other places: gorges, cedar forests, mountain ridges, abandoned monasteries, and a coastline that you will not reach on a single boat trip.

Everything you need for hiking in Cyprus

The 10 most beautiful walks — in detail

The 10 best walks on the island, described as if you were walking them with a local. Complete route descriptions, terrain information, GPS starting points, parking information, best season, and points of interest.

The complete walking route guide

All officially designated nature trails on the island, organized into 7 regions. Clear overview: distance, difficulty level, starting point, highlight, duration – at a glance.

Lists of thematic walking routes

Six curated lists: best routes for families, best sunset walks, best walks that are safe in the summer heat, best routes near Paphos, best routes near Limassol, and best routes for photography.

Local secret tips

Every top 10 route contains a local secret: the unmarked viewpoint, the hidden bay accessible only on foot, the shorter route that saves 40 minutes. Not to be found on AllTrails. Not in other guides.

Recommended restaurants after a walk

Each route ends at a specific restaurant – with name, location, and a suggestion for what to order. From trout farm Psilo Dendro to the port of Porto Latchi. No standard restaurants, no detours.

Seasonal and practical reference works

Best seasons per hiking route, what to bring (including the item most tourists forget), which hiking route apps work offline, and an overview of all seasons.

In Cyprus, you can hike in any season, as long as you know which routes to choose.

Spring (March-May)

The best season ever. Wildflowers, mild temperatures, plenty of water. All paths open.

Summer (June-August)

The coast is unforgiving. The Troodos Mountains are perfectly manageable at 1,700 meters and higher. The guide clearly marks every heat-resistant route.

Autumn (September-November)

Excellent. Cloud inversions on the mountain ridges. Golden light. Fewer people than in spring.

Winter (December-February)

The coastal paths are quiet and crisp. Snow on the Troodos adds drama – and makes it tougher.

Features that no other guide has.

A local secret on every route in the top 10.

Standard travel guides tell you that the path exists.

This guide tells you where the locals actually go: the unmarked viewpoints, hidden bays accessible only on foot, the exact spot where the photos are taken.

You won't find any of these places on AllTrails, in the Cicerone guide, or on any travel blog whatsoever.

Avakas Gorge

The shady lunch spot at Viklari (the last castle of Akamas) that most hikers on the road through the gorge simply drive past.

Artemis Trail

Walk counterclockwise: you enjoy the most beautiful views when you are still fresh and end up in the shade of the pine trees when the sun is at its highest

Madari Ridge

“The cloud inversion viewpoint 200m before the fire station — the shot that went viral locally, explained so you can find it.”

Frequently asked questions about hiking in Cyprus

Yes, and most people don't realize it. Cyprus has more than 90 officially designated nature trails, managed by the Department of Forestry, ranging from gorges at sea level to mountain routes at altitudes of 1,850 meters. The Troodos Mountains, the Akamas Peninsula, and Cape Greco are the main hiking areas, each with its own character. Spring and autumn are the best seasons, although many trails are accessible all year round.

The Caledonian Falls Trail (3 km, entirely shaded, waterfall at the end), the Cape Greco Coastal Path (flat, well-marked, 10 km), and the Artemis Trail in Troodos (7 km circular walk at 1,850 m, no strenuous climbs) are all excellent options for beginners. The guide clearly rates each route and includes a separate list of “Best walks for families”.

Certainly, but the choice of route is important. Hiking trails along the coast below 1,000 meters are very strenuous between June and August – only hike them at sunrise. The trails in the Troodos Mountains at an altitude of 1,700-1,850 meters are perfectly hikeable in the summer, as it is generally 10°C cooler there than on the coast. The route to the Caledonian Falls is the best option in the summer: completely in the shade, a river running along the entire route, and you will be there before 10 a.m. The guide clearly indicates every heat-resistant route.

There are approximately 90 officially designated nature trails scattered across the island, managed by the Cypriot Department of Forestry and local authorities. This guide covers them all, divided into 7 regions. The top 10 are described in detail in Part 1; the remaining trails are listed in the overview in Part 2.

Paphos arguably has the best access to hiking trails of all the towns on the island. Within 45 minutes, you can reach the Avakas Gorge, the Aphrodite Trail, the Smigies Trail, and the hike through the Xeros Potamos Valley – ranging from routes for beginners to very challenging hikes. The guide includes a special list of the “Best hiking trails near Paphos”.

The guide is a PDF file that you can download. After downloading, it works fully offline on any phone, tablet, or laptop. For navigation along the route, the guide recommends downloading your specific route in advance via Komoot or AllTrails. GPS starting coordinates are listed for every route in the Top 10.
