How does the Cypriot tax system work?

Cyprus combines four tax benefits that together are unique in the EU:

  • 15% corporate tax on the profits of a Cyprus Ltd, one of the lowest rates in the EU. Does your income qualify as IP-related? If so, this drops to via the IP Box regime
  • 0% income tax on the first €22,000 per year. Above that, a progressive rate applies up to a maximum of 35%, but due to strategic salary deployment, the effective tax rate remains low.
  • Non-Dom status: 0% on dividends. This is the most powerful benefit. As a non-Cypriot resident with Non-Dom status, you pay no 5% SDC (Special Contribution for Defence) on dividends and passive income. You only pay GeSY: 2.65%, capped at €4,770 per year. This benefit applies automatically for the first 17 years after settling in Cyprus.
  • 50% expatriate deduction for those working in Cyprus for the first time who have lived outside Cyprus for at least 3 years. Half of your salary is exempt from income tax, up to a maximum of €8,550 per year.

What is the total amount you pay?

An entrepreneur who generates €200,000 in turnover through a Cyprus Ltd, pays themselves a salary of €22,500, and receives the remaining profit as dividends, typically pays an effective total tax rate of 12 to 16% on the entire turnover with Non-Dom status.
