Where is it warmest in Cyprus?

The southern coast of Cyprus—with cities like Larnaca, Limassol, and Paphos—is both the warmest and driest. Due to its coastal location, the climate is more stable and somewhat less extreme, but still exceptionally warm, especially in the summer months.

However, the hottest temperatures are usually found inland, particularly in Nicosia, the capital. This city is situated in a valley, making it easy for the heat to build. Temperatures often exceed 38°C (100°F) in July and August, sometimes even reaching 42°C (107°F) on hot days.

Did you know that Nicosia is one of the hottest capitals in Europe during the summer?

And then there's the Troodos Mountains, where the story changes completely. Here it's cooler and greener – and in the winter months you can even find snow. Ideal for those who want to escape the heat or ski in a unique setting!

Best time to go to Cyprus?

The most comfortable months are April to June and September to November. It's warm enough to swim, but not too hot. Ideal for a holiday or even exploring if you're considering moving to Cyprus.

How warm is Cyprus in winter?

Even in winter it is pleasant in Cyprus:

  • Daytime: 16–20°C
  • Night: 6–10°C
  • Sea: ±17–18°C
  • Sun: 5 to 6 hours per day

So you don't need a thick winter coat, just a sweater for the evenings. Many Belgians and Dutch like to spend the winter here.

When is the rainy season in Cyprus?

Although Cyprus is known for its sunny climate, rain does occur, especially during the winter months. There is no official “rainy season” like in tropical countries, but there is a distinct period with a higher chance of precipitation.

Most rain falls between November and the end of February, with peaks in January and February. However, these are usually short, heavy showers that quickly subside. Long, drizzly rainy days like those we experience in Belgium are rare.

The coastal regions (such as Limassol, Paphos, or Ayia Napa) generally receive less rain than the interior or the Troödos Mountains. In the mountains, it can even snow in the winter. For instance, Cyprus had more than 30 cm of snow as early as March 2025.

Cyprus receives an average of 200 to 350 mm of rain per year, compared to over 800 mm in Belgium. Quite a difference!

If you absolutely want to avoid rain, the months of April through October are generally safe. Even in March and November, it's often still pleasantly dry and sunny.

Cyprus nature and climate: a golden combination

Due to the unique climate you will find in Cyprus:

  • Mediterranean nature with olive trees, vineyards and pine trees
  • Rare flora in the Troodos Mountains
  • Turtles and flamingos on the south coast (e.g. Akrotiri Salt Lake)

The climate makes the island ideal for hikers and walking, cycling, diving and wine routes, almost all year round.
